My intention in developing the Broken 1000 Faces Project was to attempt to compare creative work to a child--in as literal, diverse, and simultaneously humane a sense as possible. I call a finished work a "child", and consider myself the "biological parent".

Each piece completed as part of the Broken 1000 Faces Project, becomes a child in the Foster Parent Project.

A finished work (the child) is to me a performance, an act of communication with society, an engagement between mutual interests. When a piece from the Broken 1000 Faces Project is sold, it becomes a "foster child" to the collector, who takes on the role and responsibility of the "foster parent".

As environment influences a child's character, so does it determine a figure, or a thought. My art, when sold, will live with a new environment. And the environment created by the foster parents will reflect back on the art. Facial expression, too, is altered by environment, by the living space it occupies. I think of my faces, when they move into a new house of their foster parent, as growing up. The duty of the foster parent itself is a part of the project, in the way they are contemplated and sustained within a new home, a new 'nursery'. I ask each foster parent to bring their child up with love.

As part of the Foster Parent Project to cooperate by filling out a form. The form will include the new "name" given to the foster child (the title), the name of the foster parent and their contact information, the reason they selected this child, an "education policy"(how they child will be brought up), and the location of the "nursery" (where the work will be displayed).

Il Lee (born 1952) is a Korean American contemporary artist currently living in New York City. He is best known for working almost exclusively in the medium of ballpoint pen on paper and canvas. His works have been exhibited in Seoul, Paris, New York City and San Jose.^[1] His work is minimalist in style and can be linked to Asian calligraphy.^{[citation needed]}

Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his B.F.A. in painting from Hongik University in 1976. He then moved to New York and earned his M.F.A. from the Pratt Institute in 1982. It was around this time that he began working with ballpoint pens. His earlier works were all drawn on paper, but in recent years he has begun to work on larger primed canvases.^[1]

Lee has been the subject of a critically acclaimed retrospective Il Lee: Ballpoint Abstractions at the San Jose Museum of Art.^[2] and solo exhibitions at major cultural institutions including the Queens Museum of Art and The Vilcek Foundation in New York.^[1]

Two works by Il Lee will be featured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, along with works from the museum's permanent collection in a special installation on view from November 23, 2010-March 20, 2011.^[4]

The Antwerp based, Dutch artist Kees Goudzwaard, creates smooth surfaced oil paintings that look like taped pieces of paper. Goudzwaard’s paintings display lucid forms, neatly arranged and, in a number of cases, apparently connected by pieces of tape. For all of his paintings Kees Goudzwaard makes models ofwafer-thin materials such as paper, transparent foil and tape.

During the actual painting, he carefully applies thin, even layers of paint in order to achieve a reproduction of the paper model that is as accurate as possible. Alexander Semenov

In 2007, Russian underwater photographer Alexander Semenov graduated from Lomonosov’s Moscow State University in the department of Zoology. He specialized in the study of invertebrate animals, with an emphasis on squid brains. Soon after, he began working at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) as a senior laborer. After four years of working at the WSBS dive station, he became chief of the diving team. He now organizes all WSBS projects, and dives by himself, always with a camera.

Of his sea life photography, he writes: ‘When I first began to experiment with sea life photography, I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates underwater and then I shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure, I ended up with a few good pictures, which inspired me to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a Short-Form Docuseries exploring the power of Public Art and innovation to uplift and revitalize urban communities. The Pilot Season revolves around the Arts District of Wynwood Miami, featuring an array of internationally acclaimed and locally respected Street Artists, Graffiti Writers and Muralists.

In 2009, Urban Visionary and Placemaker Tony Goldman partnered with Jeffrey Deitch (Deitch Projects Soho and now director of MoCa Los Angeles) to create the Wynwood Walls. What began with a series of parking lots, loading docks, and drab rundown factory buildings, became a curation of high caliber murals from Futura, Shepard Fairey, OS Gemeos, Kenny Scharf and others. The Walls opened for Art Basel 2009, and now two years later the collection has expanded to include over thirty artists from around the world, becoming a “Town Center” in a district that has grown into one of the largest concentrations of commissioned murals in the World.

This year Artists, many of whom have not shown work in the United States before, were selected by Tony Goldman, Goldman Projects Arts Manager Meghan Coleman and Art Consultant Medvin Sobio of the Visual Arts Collective Viejas Del Mercado. 33third Los Angeles, Mid City Arts, and Montana Cans worked together to provide paint for the project’s ambitious expansion.

HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD explores a unique juncture in history as a new community emerges and evolves. A progressive urban revitalization campaign is examined in the first person, using this year’s new Artists and their commissions as a lens to explore a neighborhood in transition. The Series is framed by colorful overview and concluding episodes, providing the scope of past, present and future. Each episode is accented by images from legendary Documentary Photographer Martha Cooper, who has been capturing The Walls since they began in 2009. Type Books: Stop-Motion Video A Tribute To Books

Print books and the independent bookstores that sell them have not had a good year.

E-books and the readers that display them are the hot new thing and pundits are saying that your neighbourhood bookstores are going the way of the dodo.

Sean Ohlenkamp, an associate creative director at Toronto marketing agency Lowe Roche, shot the video over four nights at Type Books, an independent bookstore on Toronto's trendy Queen Street west that he shops at.

But one booklover in Toronto doesn't think so and shot a beautiful stop-motion tribute to books and stores that sell them.

The stop-motion video, titled "The Joy Of Books" was shot over four nights with the help of more than 15 volunteers, explained Sean Ohlenkamp, the video's creator. He and his team started as soon as the store was closed and worked through the night. "At around 5 a.m. we had to start putting books back for their next business day," he said.

"I never want to see another book as long as I live," he joked.

In the stop-motion video, books poke out of shelves, pile themselves on top of one another and perform some intricate choreography. Of course the books can't actually do this on their own, and had to be moved for each shot by Ohlenkamp and his team of volunteers.

"I think it's amazing. There wre moments in the video that I gasped," said Joanne Saul, co-owner of Type. "The video says long live the book. It's not dead. It gets up and it dances," she added.

The video was inspired by a much smaller project, Ohlenkamp and his wife created last year with the books in his home. "We decided to take this to the next level," he said.

"There's something magical about stores like this and I wanted to get that out here," Ohlenkamp said. (via The Huffington Post/ca)

The qualities of a great craftsman begin way beyond their first interaction with the tool. In many instances, the education begins with vision. Growing up around the smell of oil and steel, Shinya Kimura has always been fascinated by motorcycles. He speaks of the visual language that inspires him and how he employes a different methodology to the creation of his pieces. He responds to the the steel as he is one with it when heated. There is no pre-conceived intentions with the material until he is immersed into the action of creation. Like a writer plays with words, Shinya interacts with steel in many ways in order to achieve a tangible, physical manifestation of his process. Although built and fully assembled, the motorcycle is not complete without riding it, so he takes each one of them in order to connect with sky, ground, speed, and machine. This binding experience is one that he cannot replicate with anything else.

Adrián Villar Rojas’ Larger than Life Sculptures From Another Universe

What will the last piece of art ever to be made by a human look like before we disappear from the face of the earth? With this question in mind, 31-year-old Argentinean artist Adrián Villar Rojas created his imposing installation at the (current) 54th Venice Biennale (June 4, 2011 – November 27, 2011). Located in a privileged space at the Artigliere in the very heart of the Arsenale, his project consists of a group of oversized site-specific sculptures made of clay over a framework of cement, burlap and wood; the ‘larger than life’ installation is enigmatically entitled "The Murderer of Your Heritage."

With more than two-months of working in-situ with a team of builders, engineers and sculptors, Adrián Villar Rojas presented “The Murderer of Your Heritage,” the fast-rising talented artist is the youngest artist to this day to be given the honour of national representation. Argentina carries a long history in the Venice Biennale, as it was the first Latin American nation to participate in 1901. This year, Argentina has been granted a permanent pavilion in the Arsenale's Sale d'Armi, which it undertook to restore. Additionally, it has also mounted a group exhibition off-site, at the Ca' Giustinian, titled "Memory and Freedom in 20th-Century Argentine Art."

The larger than life clay and cement sculptures crowd the 250-square meter pavilion, running perpendicularly from floor to ceiling; the handmade sculptures challenge the conceptualist traditions of Argentinean art. Silky-soft textures alternate with passages that are vastly textured, as if a colossal monster appeared right before the humans disappeared and ferociously moulded the clay surface. The larger than life sculptures take the form of hybrid beings – beings on the verge of fiction, a cross-breed of half-machine, half-plant like fictional creatures. These are creatures from a far-flung planet which begs one to question whether this may be the planet where human beings now reside? The artist does of course base theories of multi-universes, which state that many different universes could coexist at Artiglierie. Could they be seen as simultaneous apparitions of these alternative worlds in ours, calling for our attention to the other paths that humankind could have taken during its evolutionary history? Villar Roja’s search for the inexplicable, the parallel universe, fiction vs. reality and evolutionary deviations thereby pervades the work.

The colossal sculptures change the relationship between the viewer and the space where the viewer feels inferior to these large scale sculptures. A cave-like feeling is given to the viewer as the height of the entrance was condensed and a special drywall construction encloses the sculptures. A special light study works dramatically and sceneographically on the sculptures giving off an intense feeling; a feeling of agony and mystery as if a magical act will to be performed. The sculptures are positioned in such a way that along with the existing setting and lighting installation, a strong dialogue is created among them.

During the opening, Adrián Villar Rojas' work was awarded with the 9th Benesse Prize addressed to a "promising artist trying to break new artistic ground with an experimental and pioneering spirit.”

Richard Pearse remains pretty elusive, only confirming on his site that he is a Kiwi “living in a shed in Patea, South Taranaki.” I wonder what that shed looks like because if his work is anything to go by I’m sure it’s exquisitely well crafted. His sculptural paintings cum woodwork mosaics conjure up old weatherboard houses with peeling paint, intricate tiled floors, aboriginal art, geometric abstract paintings, and colouring-in squares on your maths book (nostalgic). Nicole Dextras is an environmental artist working with ephemeral materials.

The Ice Typography series consists of three-dimensional words fabricated in ice placed outdoors that speak to how the viewer’s gaze frames and informs the landscape. The installations have varied from 8-foot high ice letters on the Yukon River to 18-inch high letters set in downtown Toronto. When the ice texts are installed on site, the temperature determines how long it will take for them to change state from solid to liquid. This phase of transition becomes symbolic of the interconnectedness of language and culture to the land as they are affected by time and by a constant shifting and transforming nature.

The use of text in the landscape relates to concrete and visual poetry but with the added twist of having the word’s meaning alter with the melting process. Sometimes the words relate directly to the landscape such as “silence” where the bucolic idealism of nature is transformed by the sound of the crashing waves behind it. Some words reference art history such as “Reason” which was based on Joyce Weiland’s 1968 ironic quilt that reads: Reason over Passion. Here the passion of nature erodes reason slowly but surely. Other words such as “View” signify an environmental statement warning of man’s encroachment on the land and how we consume space with our gaze. The work also pays homage to the N. E. Thing Company who in the nineteen-seventies put up signs along roads instructing drivers to: “Start Viewing” and “Stop Viewing” the landscape.

The visual poetry in this series aims to subvert the authority of the English language and the commerce of signage by representing words as vulnerable and shifting. Ice Typography absorbs light, melts and eventually leaves no trace; these words have more in common with dreams and oral stories than linear language. Words cast in ice interrupt our literal narratives, allowing a more integrated reading of the land we inhabit, as opposed to the past and current commodification of land as limitless resource. This fundamental split in perception lies at the crux of our environmental crisis. Laura Marling has collaborated with creative agency Studio Juice, and visual artist collective Shynola to create an interactive, animated digital poem, entitled The Beast.

The project, which utilises the interactive features of HTML5, presents an animated, scrolling poem, accompanied by illustrations by Shynola. The poem itself tells the story of a dark, fairytale love, with a distinctive 'movie-trailer' narration provided by Laura Marling's friend Gil, from the band Old Crow Medicine Show.

The poem, based on Marling's song of the same name, was also written by the singer, and she explains, "The first line of the poem was essentially what sparked the ideas behind the album, for one reason or another though, it didn't seem to work as a song. It came from a quote from Thomas Jefferson that I came across in a book called Sisters of Fortune, talking about the abolition of slavery, 'We have the wolf by the ears and we can neither hold him nor safely let him go'. ” I am someone who has never taken an art class in my life but have stumbled upon making Book Art / Book Origami. I didn’t think I had an artistic bone in my body and never thought of myself as creative. I had seen books that were folded similar to the Readers Digest christmas trees and wondered if it was possible to create a different design or use words. I first started off doing simple letters, alternating pages for each fold but now I am doing more complex and intricate designs. I use simple math and an exacto knife, along with lots of time. It takes me anywhere from 3 days for the simpler styles to 2 weeks for the more complex styles. I have recently ventured into logos and symbols and would like to pursue this area more. My inspiration comes from multiple things and places. I can browse the used book section for titles that stand out to me. For example the recycle symbol was created on a book titled “A World with out Trees”. I like to take a book that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into art. Rarely do I use new books, unless I am commissioned to. 1000 Reused doors

Doors was an enormous 10-story public art installation made from 1,000 reused doors by South Korean artist Choi Jeong-Hwa. From what I can tell it appears the piece was installed somewhere in Seoul in 2009. Choi discusses his process over on the Creators Project where he talks about becoming a public installation artist because he was unable to draw or paint, but would instead spend much of his time walking around the city discovering interesting trash and discarded objects and photographing it. Over the course of two weeks, the museum’s smallest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colored dot stickers and were invited to collaborate in the transformation of the space, turning the house into a vibrantly mottled explosion of color. Born in 1970, Claerwen James painted during her undergraduate degree in Zoology at Oxford University, where she was taught by Richard Dawkins, and throughout her postgraduate study on the molecular biology of cancer at ICRF, University College London and Cold Spring Harbor in the US. She took a Ph.D but accepted that painting, not science, was really the focus of her creative life, and retrained at the Slade School of Fine Art, graduating from the painting department in 2003 with a first class degree and winning the Melvill Nettleship Prize for Figure Composition (previously held both by Gwen Ravarat and by Gwen John.) Many of my photographs are difficult to make. Some can even be dangerous. I do not want to have someone else coming in harm’s way taking the risks I need to take: to lean out off a cliff or stay underwater for the sake of my picture. We control how much pain we can tolerate; such information is unknowable by anyone else. Some of my pictures might look simple, but in reality they can test the limits of what a human body is capable of or willing to risk. Thus I title them self-portraits, so the viewer knows who is in the picture and who took it.

Rum brand Havana Club is challenging people to take everyday objects and turn them into something new, such as a pair of speakers made from Nike trainers, tin can headphones and an ad hoc picnic table.
Taking the theme Inspired Ingenuity, the project is supposedly inspired by the people of Cuba who, in the face of the US-imposed blockade on their country have to make a virtue of repurposing and recycling, creating what they need from the scarce resources available. The competition is taking place over the first six months of 2011, challenging artists, musicians and 'other creative talents' to 'take the everyday and turn it into something special'. A winner will be picked each month, and the final winner will win a trip to Cuba.

To support it, design studio Intercity commissioned three artists to create a piece of work that echoes this theme.

INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment.
The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.
Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture.
"Influencers" belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

Houxo Que aka Questa is an artist in Tokyo.He started his career as painter in 1999 with a background in graffiti and has been working on canvases, live-paintings, murals since. His main series of works, which frequently references flowers, titled "Day and night" are luminous installations using florescent paints and black lights.

Mexican taxi driver-turned-photographer Oscar Fernando Gomez uses the window of his cab to frame life on the streets of Monterey. His work is currently showing as part of this year's Brighton Photo Biennial, curated by Martin Parr.
Gomez began by photographing weddings, using the money earnt from driving a cab to supplement his income. He started documenting the urban life of Monterey when he and his wife decided to have a child, to make a record of what he saw each day. Tragically, his daughter died just after birth, but Gomez continued the project, capturing both the joys and the struggles that he witnesses driving around the city.
