Man On Earth, Ruper Vandervell's Photographs

Rupert Vandervell’s photographs from his ‘Man On Earth’ series are remarkable monochromatic pictures of man overwhelmed by the very city he built, large edifices casting shadows on his life.

They are beautiful, stark, film noir images that juxtapose humanity and machine, his subjects walking through narrow channels of light or sitting in pools of light, alone, solitary, forgotten amidst the grandeur of London. However Vandervill doesn’t seek to show us London rather each space is a representation of the modern city, one that is forever evolving. It is the people we need to focus on, our relationship to the space in which we live, move around, engage in. Here’s what he has to say about his work:

This series of pictures is less about the environment they are taken in and more about the ‘human factor’ moving through it.
Captured against the ever-changing backdrop of the modern city, these photographs highlight the presence of life and the unique visual characteristics of the human form against the urban background.
